Experimental decorations

In an effort to make our tree look a little less bare I spent some time this weekend attempting to make some new decorations. Most of my previous creations have been either knitted or crocheted:

But knitting and crocheting takes time and that is something I don’t have much of right now. What I do have, however, are lots of bits and pieces of Christmas fabrics left over from other projects.

First off I wanted to make a patchwork bauble. The idea came from something I saw in a magazine. I looked but couldn’t find a tutorial anywhere on the web, so I had to go it alone. I made a pointy-oval shaped template from some card and used it to cut out four bits of fabric. I sewed them together, stuffed it with scraps of quilt wadding and attached a bit of ribbon to hang it from the tree:

Next, I took this fabric, which clearly has only one true purpose in life:

I cut out an appropriate shape, filled it with quilt wadding and sewed it up. Can you spot the odd one out?

Finally I found a tiny scrap of the Michael Miller Yule Critters fabric that I used on my advent calendar. I made a quilt sandwich with some leftover wadding and another scrap of fabric, added some ric-rac round the edge and (as 15-month-old James would say) ta-da!

None of these creations turned out quite as well as I’d have liked, but at least our tree is not quite so empty now.
